GRYPHON framed up

Some photos of the framed up GRYPHON airframe. Note that the elevon servos are mounted in the wings eliminating the sliding tray elevon control. This allows TX mixing for much more adjustability. It also means the top cover of the fuselage is permanently glued on making the assembly stronger.

Video - Old School Wingpress

This video of our wing press shows the full process of skinning and pressing some 50" wing panels. I really prefer the wing press over bagging when utilizing balsa skins which is primarily what we do here at Old S'CooL Hobbies. On this particular set of panels we used West Systems epoxy resing as the adhesive. This material requires a minimum of 24 hours cure time. We have done much testing and pressings now utilizing GG (gorilla glue) with great success. This allows much less cure time of around 4 hours only. And the way GG penetrates the wood grain, it greatly increases skin density, durability and produces a skin-bond that is virtually impervious to delamination.

Crank up the tunes and Enjoy the show.

Super Gigolo 1.8m

One of the popular aerobatic gliders of the 90's was the GIGOLO designed by Dale Winder. In those days there were many semi-aerobatic slope gliders in the 50"-60" winspan size but on our slope the Gigolo stood out as a great performer capable of maneuvers that made even the average pilot look like a pro. The idea was to build them light with larger than normal flight surfaces for extreme aerobatics. What we see today as 'flips and floops' was being done with the Gigolo 20 years ago in the hands of a capable pilot. The popular set-up was to set the CG way back turning this slope glider into a very agile and exciting bird to fly. Dale was the best at doing what we now know as VTPR Aerobatics before the term was a houshold word.

Fast forward to 2011, I decided to take one of my Gig's and do some modifications to the fuselage and wing in an attempt to morph it into a dedicated VTPR airframe. I call it the Super Gigolo.

Here are the Mods:
  • Symmetrical wing extended to 72"
  • Nose extended 2"
  • Enlarged vertical fin and rudder
  • Large chord ailerons
  • Massive throws throughout
  • 38oz AUW, 9.8oz W.L.
  • 4 channel full mixing with 'snap flaps'
Results:

The plane flows like a cadillac in this configuration. It has great response and control near the ground, and lower speeds than the short wingspan Gigolo making her a real fun ship to fly. The confidence level of the pilot is hightened due to its very predictable nature.

GRYPHON Aerobatic Wing

The GRYPHON aerobatic glider designed by Ron Neal is one of our favorite old s'cool models that yours truly had wanted for a long time. Well in 2009 I finally built one from scratch and this is the final product. What we are offering here is a scratch-build version. If you prefer to build the Laser-cut GRYPHON, it may be viewed here.

Basic specs:

  • 36-40oz AUW (all up weight)
  • 2 channel mixing
I am the sole licensee of the model awarded by Bob Martin of Bob Martin RC Models. I have offered this 'sub-kit' for 2 years running now in the form of a scratch-build project for those who enjoy building from the ground up like me.

Scratch-Kit consists of:
  • Wing rib, vertical fin and fuselage part templates (no wood)
  • TE and LE slotting tools
  • Complete build notes with photos
  • Original free-hand drawn plan copies
  • Wood cut list

Old S'CooL Hobbies blog intro 01/01/13

2013 marks a new year and a new blog page for OLD S'CooL Hobbies. I have really taken a liking to the blog format as it is so much easier for a webmaster to maintain than a dedicated webpage. With more new models coming and the need to install them on the old webpage, I just said lets do the blog format. This is my 3rd blog to date, so the format is favored. And its much more dynamic and easy to navigate for you the visitor. I hope you enjoy our new format and check back often.

I will be posting all the glider models I have developed to date with build logs, tips and flying videos. I also want to encourage you to send in your personal glider model builds and videos of your models doing their thing. This is a space to showcase OLD S'CooL Hobbies models but is also a space for you to share your experiences, photos and model builds.

I will be posting some videos and links associated to the VTPR type of flying as well as favored general aerobatic flying videos of similar models we spotlight.

A few Navigation notes FYI:
  • Use the SEARCH window with key words to quickly find stuff.
  • You can FOLLOW by email notification by submitting your address.
  • The LABELS section pulls up all the chosen associated posts here.
  • The BLOG ARCHIVE allows you to pull up posts month by month or individually.
  • The PAGES section will pull up longer modeling versions of specific projects.
  • The VIDEO tag in the Labels section will pull up ALL videos on this blog.

Good Lift... Eric
