When the Mattel designers chose cars for the initial “Sweet 16”, it was a no-brainier that the Camaro should be one of them! In fact, not only was it one of first Hot Wheels cars, but many experts and former employees claim it was the very first Hot Wheel tooled, assembled and brought into production in 1968. Supporting evidence shows the Camaro first came in the form of numerous prototypes that have been found in collections belonging to former Mattel employees.
There are differences of opinion as to what color was the first off the line but it is believed to be the blue car. The evolution of
the first generation 1/64th scale casting and the number of early variations that have been
discovered leads us to conclude that the
Custom Camaro was a favorite test piece in the early days of Hot Wheels. Later in 1982 it was re-casted and named the 67 Camaro. Then in 2011, the 1968 COPO (Central Office Production Order) Camaro was cast and released.
